Hwy 31 in Eastern Oklahoma

Town of Bokoshe in 2008

My father delivered Coca Cola here
in the 1960's and 70's. Back then Bokoshe
had seen it's better days, but there were
still a lot of business's still open.
The coal mining days were over
and people were leaving to
find work in other places.

This brown brick building stands where once
Roy Gilberts Mercantile was.

Other stores and gas stations I
remember are gone also without
a trace of where they were:

Alter's Grocery
Shore's Grocery
Abernathy's Station and Grocery
Betty's Beauty Shop

This old building has been around here a while.

On down the road west to McCurtain.
Between Bokoshe and Mccurtain there was
once a town called Milton. The only
thing I could find was "Old Milton Road".

Here is a building I remember
as a cafe when entering McCurtain
in the 1960's.

I believe the building front on
the left was Oliver's Grocery
back then.
Another side of Oliver's Grocery.

There was once a high wooden deck
on back loaded with pop crates.

This was once known as Been's Grocery.

To the right of the building was once an
old bus made into a cafe. It wasn't open
as I remember in the 1960's, but I remember
it because it was so odd looking.

I don't remember what was in these buildings then.

I do remember a man named Tony who
had a bar which was here somewhere.

Now about the only thing open here;
this building was opened by Wilson's
Grocery who moved from up the road a bit.

Mr. Wilson was in his 60's as I remember
back then. He used to call me Smiley to rub
me (Smiley was a man who kept the pop bottles
sorted for the soft drink driver's).

Mr. Wilson was a very friendly and nice man.
A lot of good memories for me from back then.

This building sits on the junction of
31 and 26 hwy.

It was a cafe back in the 60's.
